Life in India

The purpose of this section is two-fold. The first is to provide an account of the joys and trials of recovering from an illness in India. The second is to help you have a better idea of what to expect, should you be contemplating doing something similar to what we did.

India is a vast country, and varies from the crisp, cool elevations of the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains in the north, to the bone dry deserts in the central portions, to the steamy heat of the south. The peoples are as varied. Religious beliefs and culture are widely varied. It can all be very fascinating and enriching.

If you wanted a one-word description for India, that word would be, “intense.” Everything is intense. The assault on the senses is intense, from the intoxicating delight of the frangipani and jasmine, to the whiff of an open sewer. The colors are intense, and so is the traffic.

Most foreigners who visit India love it . . . and hate it, at least some of the time. Often, it is both at the same time. But, for most people it gets into your blood, and you keep wanting to go back.

If you don’t know what to expect, India can be a shock to one who is used to western availability of every indulgence, and the comparative luxury in which we live. India does take getting used to, but it is more than worth the effort.

And so, dear friend, we hope that, as you read through our experiences and thoughts during our healing stay in India, some of your fears and concerns about making that trip will fade. We hope that those fears and concerns will be replaced with anticipation, excitement, and determination to experience your next great adventure.

Go forth . . .
