Trusting God
As time and life events have passed, I have been learning how trustworthy God really is. Do I fully trust Him? Intellectually, yes. But, I am still battling with my desire to be in control.
In fact, I really have to admit that I want to be God. I want to be able to reach out and touch other’s lives with healing and good things, just like Christ. But, Christ did it to glorify the Father whereas I would be doing it to . . . glorify me, perhaps. I would like to come to the place where every good thing I do is because I want to please the God who loves me, and whom I love.
If you, my friend, would like to find out more about the God who loves you unconditionally, no matter what kind of a person you think you are, pick up a Bible. It really doesn’t matter which translation; most are pretty good and all have flaws of some kind. A modern English version is a lot easier to get through than something like the King James.
A couple of important things to keep in mind:
- Even if you don’t believe in God, just ask Him to open your heart that you might understand what you read. God always answers a sincere prayer for wisdom, even from an unbeliever.
- Try to put away all the things you have heard. There is a lot of bad information about God been preached from pulpits and late-night televangelists. Let the Bible speak for itself, for it is the word of God.
- If you decide to ask someone questions about what you read, test everything they say by what is written in the Bible. Is it logical? Does it make sense? God is consistent and does not contradict Himself. He never changes, although He may change His methods from time to time.
- Above all remember that God claims to be a God of unconditional love. And, God does not lie. Try to keep that in mind. There are some very difficult things in the first part of the Bible, called the Old Testament, to understand. But, believe me, eventually you will come to understand why he did things the way he did. There was no other way to accomplish what needed to be done.
If you have not read the Bible before, or very little, you might want to start with the Book of John, in the New Testament. John talks more about the love of God as expressed through Jesus Christ, and John really loved him.
Then, read Mathew, Mark and Luke. And, don’t forget a short prayer asking for understanding each time before you read. As I said, if you don’t believe in God, challenge him with something like, “God, if you really exist, show me. Convince me. Help me to overcome my doubt. Thank you.”
Resources you might consider using that I trust:
Amazing Facts has a lot of free e-books and an excellent on-line Bible study.
There is a lot of good information on creation versus evolution at Amazing Discoveries.
There are some excellent programs, some for kids, at Three Angels Broadcasting Network.
Great Biblical discussions with a contemporary youth orientation can be listened to, or downloaded from Creekside Community Church.
If you decide you want to trust me, I will be happy to try to answer your questions. I am not a theologian, and I have never studied religion in a school. All my knowledge, such as it is, comes from reading the Bible, reading and hearing what other people have to say about it, and trying to allow God to give me wisdom.
When Christ called people to join with him to spread the wonderful word of God’s promises throughout the world, he didn’t recruit the religious leaders of the day. He called crude, uneducated fishermen, tax collectors and other similar characters. Those without a lot of formal religious training are more teachable, perhaps.
Anyhow, if you truly seek God, you will find him, and you will be glad you did.
